Juneteenth Association of Louisiana Essay_Poster_Comic Strip Contest Guidelines

Purposes of Contest:

The purpose of the Juneteenth Association of Louisiana Essay_Poster_Comic Strip Contest is to encourage youth to learn about and reflect on Juneteenth, and creatively express their thoughts about it through art and writing, based on an annual theme.

  1. The annual theme focuses on African and African American Historical Facts and to help understand why freedom is precious and calls for true understanding.

  2. Display artwork and essays of winners from Juneteenth organizations around Louisiana during the association’s annual conference.

Registration

Registration open June 19 - July 1.  Contestants will register online and submit through the website.  Essays and photo copies of artwork will be uploaded through the website regisration form below.

Poster or Comic Strip Contest Guidelines:

Eligible ages:      8 to 12 years

Requirements:

  1. Use the theme stated above.

  2. Create a poster or 1 page comic strip.

  3. Write the following on the top left of the artwork:

    1. Child’s name

    2. Parent’s name & phone number (if under 18)

    3. Address

    4. Email

    5. Phone number, if different from parent’s

    6. Name of local Juneteenth organization

  4. After winning a local Juneteenth organization’s contest, complete the registration form on this website and upload a photo of the artwork.

Winner Prizes:  Three winners to be awarded gift cards. (Amounts to be announced at a later date.)

Essay or Comic Book Contest Guidelines:

Eligible ages:      13 to 18 years

  1. Use the theme stated above.

  2. Essay minimum number of words:  150

  3. Essay Format:  Double-space (Neatly handwritten or typed); well-written

  4. Comic Strip Format:  Minimum of 3 pages, neatly handwritten or typed; well written

  5. Write the following on the top left of paper:

    1. Child’s name

    2. Parent’s name & phone number (if under 18)

    3. Address

    4. Email

    5. Phone number, if different from parent’s

    6. Name of local Juneteenth organization

  6. After winning a local Juneteenth organization’s contest, complete the registration form on the state association’s website and upload the document.

 

Winner Prizes:  Three winners to be awarded gift cards

(Amounts to be announced at a later date.).
